This journey through Azerbaijan reveals a land of contrasts, where ancient history meets modernity and natural features. The capital, Baku, presents a city that combines its UNESCO-listed Old City with contemporary architecture. From the stone carvings of medieval palaces to the forms of contemporary cultural centres, Baku offers varied urban exploration. The itinerary extends beyond the city to reveal Azerbaijan’s connection to fire and its historical roots. South of Baku, the Gobustan State Historical and Cultural Reserve holds prehistoric petroglyphs, a record of human activity spanning millennia. Adjacent to these artworks, the landscape of bubbling mud volcanoes provides a geological feature. Further exploration uncovers sites where natural gas has shaped spiritual and cultural practices. The Fire Temple Ateshgah, a historical place of worship, and Yanardag, the perpetually burning mountain, both reflect Azerbaijan’s identity as the “Land of Fire.” This journey progresses through the country’s diverse heritage, from its Caspian shores to its ancient rock art and enduring natural flames.

The route continues to the Maiden Tower, then traces Baku's historical trade links through surviving caravanserai courtyards. The day concludes with a walk along Nizami Street, a central promenade, before encountering the contemporary architecture of the Heydar Aliyev Center, which stands apart from Baku's historic core.
